2004 Racing SummaryThe 2004 racing season saw continued strength in the J44 class even as other offshore one-design classes struggle. The class celebrated the sixth consecutive one-design start for the Bermuda race and remains the only yacht to have received a one-design start in this offshore classic. Aside from the usual strong contingent of north east US based yachts, John Sommes of Bayview Yacht Club outside of Detroit shipped his Sagitta east to participate in this event. The event was won for the second consecutive time by Eduardo Salvati's team aboard Mabuhuay. Eduardo was served up with strong competition and a very tricky set up of light wind and strong current features to overcome. Second and of great note was Norm Schulman's Charlie V. Norm and his team pulled off a second place win despite sailing the last one and one half days with not power and only a handheld GPS and compass. The other major event this year was the well attended (nine boats) J44 North American Championships. This year, the event was once again held in conjunction with the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club's Fall Series. This year saw uncharacteristically high winds for three of the four days. The defending Champions aboard Jeff Willis' Challenge IV, staved off a strong challenge from Larry & Anne Glenn's Runaway to be one of the few repeat winners in the sixteen year history of the North American Championships. 2004 Racing Results
